Workshops for 2010

CorkStop Studios is planning new workshops for 2010. We are considering workshops in the following areas: Printing (digital, encaustic print, solar etching), Photography (how to take professional grade photos of your artwork), Encaustic, Abstract Collage.

Digital Arts - 2 Day workshop

Learn how to turn your photographs into a fine art digital print using the latest Adobe Photoshop CS4 application. This two-day workshop will focus on creating a “digital montage” by combining digital photographs and original watercolor washes into a digital file that is printed on large format Epson printers with archival-pigmented inks.

Waxing poetic at CorkStop Studios

Lynn Kishiyama gave another great Hot wax Cool art workshop at the studio on the weekend. It was a varied group, mostly local but some came all the way from Los Angeles and made a weekend of it. The 2 day intensive, gave attendees the time to experiment with the process on the first day and then execute their ideas with outstanding results on the following day. The session wrapped up with a critique of the work accompanied with a glass of wine from one of the local vineyards.

Solar Etching

On January 24th 2009 CorkStop Studios offers a Solar Etching workshop.

Solarplate etching offers a non-toxic approach to plate making using just tap water and the sun. Learn how to transform original drawings, photocopies, digital images and photographs into high quality, finished prints. Create both relief and intaglio plates.

This workshop is a 'hands on' experience. First you produce an image on a transparent acetate, or piece of glass using liquid opaque paint or ink, pens and/or a printed digital image.

Your artwork is then exposed in the sun to a light sensitive metal plate (solarplate).

Inking up the plate and pulling the first proof print is probably the most exciting part of this process. Participants will create 2 pieces of artwork, using 2 plates and pull 2 prints from each plate.

Holonic Art Workshop and Exhibition – 27 September, 2008

Workshop. Saturday 27 September, 1.00pm – 5.00pm.

The Holonic Art exhibit will be preceded by a workshop with Sarah Winkler titled “Hidden, Revealed and Transformed.” The class will mix imagery and words, combine collage paper ephemera with decorative embellishments to create a collaborative FATbook. Sarah will spark your creative fires and guide you through the collage process as you create several small collage “pages” to swap with each other. The pages will then be bound into a fatbook on the spot.Participants are encouraged to bring their treasure box of collage papers, fibers, charms and other embellishments to work with and/or share with the group. Enjoy collaborative artwork by over 60 local, national and international artists at the first Holonic Art event on September 27, 2008 from 5pm till 9pm. The Holonic Art Movement was created with the vision of bringing artists together in the form of a shared canvas that travels from artist to artist, or by giving a number of panels or canvas's to artists around the world with a single unifying concept in mind, and then mounting them as one piece. "Hot Wax / Cool Art"

The studio just completed a fascinating and dynamic workshop led by Lynn Kishiyama. "Hot Wax/ Cool Art" explored the ancient technique of painting with wax, a technique which is currently experiencing a revival in popularity. Encaustic wax was first practiced by the Greeks as far back as the 5th century BC. It's a tricky process, at times frustrating, but ultimately incredibly rewarding. Lynn Kishiyama is a master presenter with a wealth of knowledge and the work created by the students by the end of the day was living proof of this

Do you want an encaustic Workshop at CSS

There seems to be some interest in an encaustic workshop of some kind. I know that R&F paints offer workshops on the east coast, but there doesn't seem to be much on the west coast.

If there is enough interest CorkStop Studios, located in San Luis Obispo, California (between LA and SF) would be the venue for the workshop.

At this point I simply need to hear back from anyone who is interested in attending this workshop.

CSS Open Studios Event in Oct 2007

CorkStop Studios has some interesting events planned for the South County San Luis Obispo Open Studio weekend (Sat. October 13th and Sun. October 14th) 10.00am - 4.00pm. The studio will be featuring new work by contemporary artists Xenia Madison, Carol Paquet and Anne Stahl along with guest artist Christo Braun from Pennsylvania, who works primarily in resin on stainless steel.

On Saturday October 13th at 12.00pm, Trudy Montgomery, an art advisor from San Francisco-based Blue Tangerine ( www.bluetangerineart.com) will give a slide presentation on “The Art of Collecting”. The mission of Blue Tangerine is to demystify the process of buying original contemporary art. The company works with artists and art sources nationally and internationally to provide quality artwork for private collectors, corporations, hotels, designers, and architects.

On Sunday, October 14th a Certified Picture Framer from “Accents" Custom Picture Framing will be in attendance the entire day. John Buerger will be giving brief presentations on the hour every hour throughout the day starting at 11.00am. He will reveal tricks of the trade used to design a picture frame that will enhance the beauty of your original artwork, so that all who see it can appreciate it to the fullest.
