Workshops for 2010

CorkStop Studios is planning new workshops for 2010. We are considering workshops in the following areas: Printing (digital, encaustic print, solar etching), Photography (how to take professional grade photos of your artwork), Encaustic, Abstract Collage.

If you have any suggestions, or would like to submit interest in a particular area of study, please contact us at info@corkstopstudios.com.

Waxing poetic at CorkStop Studios

Lynn Kishiyama gave another great Hot wax Cool art workshop at the studio on the weekend. It was a varied group, mostly local but some came all the way from Los Angeles and made a weekend of it. The 2 day intensive, gave attendees the time to experiment with the process on the first day and then execute their ideas with outstanding results on the following day. The session wrapped up with a critique of the work accompanied with a glass of wine from one of the local vineyards.

Abstract Collage workshop a great success!

Lynn Kishiyama gave an informative and dynamic collage workshop to a large group of 20 people from the central coast.

The next workshop to take place at the studio is HOT WAX/COOL ART
Saturday and Sunday, March 14/15 (10.00am – 4.00pm)
Encaustic wax was used over 2500 years ago by the Greeks and is experiencing a revival in contemporary art. Beeswax, tree resin and pigment is applied hot and fused to a substrate creating a beautiful, translucent quality that can’t be achieved by paints alone. The workshop fee is $275 for both days. "The History of Roots" beds down.

Carol Paquet's "The History of Roots" was installed in a private home in Edna Valley, Central coast, California - starting 2009 off on a good note. The artwork was created initially on canvas with oil paint (part of the Penumbra series) and then overlaid with shadows to complete the vision. The final piece is an archival print on paper, 56" x 33" and framed in a solid steel frame with museum quality glass. The piece is installed at an adjunct to the grand entrance, at the end of a wide corridor flanked by floor to ceiling windows overlooking Edna valley.

Klaus and Sabine Strobel are now the proud owners of three of Paquet's works.

Royal Flush - collaborative print

To discover a taste of Corkstop Studio artists' first collaborative print since Roger and Pacha have joined the studio, visit "Hearts Obispo" at ARTS Space Obispo in the Creamery anytime between January 21st through February 14th, 2008. Or go to the February 6th Art After Dark event for which ARTS Obispo goes all-out. Amazing sweet treats, local wines and live music set a festive mood for bidding on larger items in the silent auction.
"Royal Flush" was created on acetate film with ink, both rolled and drawn and scratched. It was then scanned, edited and printed with an Epson 7880 onto Canon etching paper in a limited edition of 8 prints.

Solar Etching

On January 24th 2009 CorkStop Studios offers a Solar Etching workshop.

Solarplate etching offers a non-toxic approach to plate making using just tap water and the sun. Learn how to transform original drawings, photocopies, digital images and photographs into high quality, finished prints. Create both relief and intaglio plates.

This workshop is a 'hands on' experience. First you produce an image on a transparent acetate, or piece of glass using liquid opaque paint or ink, pens and/or a printed digital image.

Your artwork is then exposed in the sun to a light sensitive metal plate (solarplate).

Inking up the plate and pulling the first proof print is probably the most exciting part of this process. Participants will create 2 pieces of artwork, using 2 plates and pull 2 prints from each plate.

The Harbour Of My Heart Lies Empty

On September 27, 2008 several artists will participate in an international art happening at CorkStop Studios. This happening coincides with our 'Holonic Art Exhibition' - the first of it's kind, where artit's collaborative work is on display. The happening 'The Harbour Of My Heart Lies Empty' was conceived by Danish artist and collaborator Henrik Sandner. Here is his description of the event:

On September 27, 2008 artists from all over the world will take part in this one-day art event. On this date they will launch small ships or boats in various designs and materials into the sea.

As a documentation of the event, pictures will be taken and uploaded to a website (www.theharbourofmyheart.com) which can be seen from October 1.

This gesture is to be seen as a commemoration of all sorrow and bereavement in the world of today.

”No matter whether it is war, natural disaster, or lack of love that causes this sense of disertion and sadness, it is universal and does not discriminate; therefore people around the world are united by this feeling.” –says Henrik Sandner (Denmark) who took the initiative to this event.

No one has ownership to this project. It is neither sponsored by companies nor cultural institutions. There are only artists who operates independently only united in creating this project.

And as such, the project can be compared to the launched boats which are taken by the waves and thrown about by the mercy of the sea.

Holonic Art Workshop and Exhibition – 27 September, 2008

Workshop. Saturday 27 September, 1.00pm – 5.00pm.

The Holonic Art exhibit will be preceded by a workshop with Sarah Winkler titled “Hidden, Revealed and Transformed.” The class will mix imagery and words, combine collage paper ephemera with decorative embellishments to create a collaborative FATbook. Sarah will spark your creative fires and guide you through the collage process as you create several small collage “pages” to swap with each other. The pages will then be bound into a fatbook on the spot.Participants are encouraged to bring their treasure box of collage papers, fibers, charms and other embellishments to work with and/or share with the group. "Hot Wax / Cool Art"

The studio just completed a fascinating and dynamic workshop led by Lynn Kishiyama. "Hot Wax/ Cool Art" explored the ancient technique of painting with wax, a technique which is currently experiencing a revival in popularity. Encaustic wax was first practiced by the Greeks as far back as the 5th century BC. It's a tricky process, at times frustrating, but ultimately incredibly rewarding. Lynn Kishiyama is a master presenter with a wealth of knowledge and the work created by the students by the end of the day was living proof of this

CorkStop Studios artist wins major award

Congratulations to Xenia Madison, one of CorkStop Studios artists who won the artists entry for the 24th Central Coast Wine Classic 2008. Her winning painting - "Open to this Moment" will be etched on a 9 liter Salmanazar bottle of a limited edition, locally produced Cuvee. The actual painting will be on auction at the same event on July 12th, 2008. This is a huge charity event which typically raises over $700,000 for charity annually.

DR. STEVEN KURTZ CLEARED OF ALL CHARGES!

On April 21, Federal Judge Richard J. Arcara dismissed the government’s entire indictment against Dr. Steven Kurtz as “insufficient on its face.” If you're not familiar with this one of the more puzzling pursuits of the US DoJ here is how it all began:

In May 2004, the Joint Terrorism Task Force illegally detained artist and SUNY Buffalo professor Steve Kurtz of Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). They seized documents, computers, and equipment used in four of CAE’s projects, including scientific equipment used to test food for the presence of genetically modified organisms. The seized materials included a project that was to have been part of an exhibition and performance at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) and three other projects that had been safely displayed in museums and galleries throughout Europe and North America. The New York State Commissioner of Public Health determined that the materials seized by the FBI pose no public safety risk. All of the materials are legal and commonly used for scientific education and research activities in universities and high schools, and are universally regarded by scientists as safe. Nevertheless, today Steve Kurtz and Robert Ferrell, Professor of Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health, face a possible 20 years in prison in what has become increasingly clear is a politically motivated attempt to silence an artist and scientist whose work is critical of government policy.

Focus the Nation Sustainability Art Exhibit

Join the cause and visit the UU Gallery for the Focus the Nation Sustainability Art Exhibit. Kick off the new quarter with artwork on display by Cal Poly students Ben Eckold, Cristan Alley, Sara LeGrady, and Erica Janoff. The exhibit will be on display now through January 30, 2008. The UU Gallery located on the second floor of the University Union.

The San Luis Obispo Open Studios Tour at CSS

A special preview of our October show with guest artist, Christ Braun, was held at CorkStop Studios on the evening before the San Luis Obispo open studios tour. Trudy Montgomery of Blue Tangerine Art - a San Francisco based art advisory firm - gave a presentation about 'The Art of Collecting".



The open studios tour that followed was also a big success, with artists and collectors visiting the studio to view the art, capture the magic of the studio and listen to one of the three workshops/presentations.

New Intaglio Printing Press at CSS

CorkStop Studios now has a printing press. The 26" x 46" large bed, provides plenty of room for larger printing. CSS is not currently set up for acids, so we are exploring the wonderful world of solar exposure etching.

We are planning to post images of recent prints from CSS artists, Anne Stahl and Carol Paquet, as well as exploring the possibility of holding a solar exposure printmaking workshop at CorkStop Studios.
